n 1870, approximately a dozen individuals who shared an amazing belief joined together and founded St. Peter’s Free Church which meant no pew rental fee. The first worship space that was available was in a saloon, then moving to the third story of the Opera House.
A short four years later, in 1874, as the congregation grew through God’s blessing, they moved to their first building on Second Street, from there moving to the building that was located on Route 6 on the banks of Tunkhannock Creek. However, this building flooded multiple times and was finally deemed unusable in 2004.
Still resolute in their beliefs and fellowship, the congregation worshiped in the former shoe store next to Rite Aid from 2004-2010.Taking a risk and with God’s guidance, they built a new building, located at 3832 Sr6, Tunkhannock, in which many groups in the community have found a home.
This building being on higher ground is made of 5 modular units, and has multi-purpose space throughout the building.
The Sanctuary, being the largest room of them all, is used for worship, prayer, labyrinth, healing, community speakers, yoga, and drumming.
Just below that is the Undercroft (an Episcopal/Anglican name for downstairs), where there are many meetings and community groups such as AA, Weight Watchers, SMART Recovery, Tai Chi and chiropractic service. In the winter, there is an Organic Farmers Market along with a Plant based Eating Group. In summer, there is Peace Camp and Music Camp. An organic, community garden is located on the outside.
Our parishioners are someone searching for meaning in life, prayer, love or just something as simple as a hug. All though currently, the congregations is a small one, we invite individuals one at a time to visit, to see how it feels and be embraced by God’s love.
